How to repair holes in your vinyl siding without replacing the entire wall

How to Replace Damaged Vinyl Siding | Ask This Old House · 6:20 · Video: This Old House · Watch at the source

In short: General contractor Tom Silva demonstrates how to remove and replace damaged sections of vinyl siding. This guide explains the process of releasing, cutting, and securing new pieces to ensure your home exterior remains intact and properly maintained.

Vinyl siding is installed by nailing it through a dedicated strip, with each subsequent course locking into the one below it. To repair damage, you must first release the siding from this locking mechanism by working your hand into the seam. Once the damaged piece is removed, a new section from the same manufacturer and color should be installed.

When securing the new piece, it is essential to nail it loosely to accommodate natural expansion and contraction. If only a portion of the siding is damaged, you can cut out the affected area using a utility knife and a speed square. For the final locking step, a zip tool—available at local home centers—is used to snap the siding back into place.
