In short: Starting a hive requires more than just a box and some bees. From managing the queen to protecting your colony from the elements, the setup process involves specific steps to ensure your new inhabitants thrive and find their way home.

Landscape specialist Roger Cook recommends setting cinderblocks on the earth to shield the hive from moisture and rain. A baseboard is then placed on these blocks, followed by the Langstroth bee box. For the internal structure, you can hang new frames by their rabbit ears or use older, pre-started frames from an existing hive to give the colony a head start. If you feel uncertain about the process, consider hiring a professional beekeeper to assist you. This ensures the initial installation is handled correctly.

The introduction of the bees requires precision. You will typically work with a 3-lb bee package, which should be coated in a sugar water spray. After donning protective clothing, the bees are poured into the frame box. Handle the queen with care: extract the cage, pull the plug, and suspend the queen box amidst the frames, candy-side down. Ensure you are wearing a proper protective beekeeping suit before beginning. This safety measure is essential when handling live insects.

Once the bees are settled, use a bee brush to gently guide them onto the frames. An internal feeder can be added and filled with a mixture of one pound of sugar to one pint of water. To protect the colony, place both an inner and external cover on the hive, and secure the top with a rock to prevent it from blowing away. Finally, leave the bee package near the hive so any remaining bees can find their entrance. As the colony grows, you can add another bee box layer with frames after about one month. You will need approximately one gallon of this sugar mixture for the feeder. This provides sufficient nourishment for your new colony.
