The FEE method: why woodworking precision begins with a sequence
In short: In woodworking, a crooked board is a ruined project. To achieve professional results, you must transform rough lumber into perfectly square stock using a specific hierarchy of operations. It is not just about making wood flat; it is about a systematic progression known as FEE.
The foundation of accurate woodworking lies in milling rough lumber to create straight edges and square faces. Nearly every major machine—including table saws, band saws, and routers—requires these geometric fundamentals to function correctly. Without them, the cumulative errors in your cuts will prevent the final piece from fitting together properly. To manage this, woodworkers follow a standard procedure called FEE, which stands for Faces, Edges, and Ends. The sequence is non-negotiable: you must flatten the faces first, then square the edges against those faces, and finally cut the ends square to the edges. The jointer is typically the primary tool for the first stage. It is used to eliminate 'cupping' or 'bowing' in the wide part of the board.
If a piece is already reasonably flat, a woodworker might skip the jointer and move straight to the planer, but for most rough stock, the jointer provides the necessary baseline. A critical nuance in this process is batch processing. To ensure consistency, a woodworker performs the exact same operation on every piece of wood before changing any machine settings. This maintains uniformity across the entire project. Furthermore, success depends on understanding grain direction. If the wood fibers are oriented toward the spinning blades, the machine will 'tear out' the wood. By rotating the board so the fibers are pushed down by the blade rather than caught by it, the woodworker ensures a smooth, clean finish.
