How to fix a window that is no longer parallel
In short: In this clip, general contractor Tom Silva from Ask This Old House uses shims to fix a window that is no longer parallel because it was installed incorrectly. General contractor Tom Silva shows you how to use shims and expanding foam to restore its alignment.
To straighten a window, you must first determine if it is out of alignment by measuring the width at the top, middle, and bottom. If these measurements are not equal, the window is not parallel.
The process involves scoring and prying the casing away from the wall to access the rough opening. Once the gap is visible, shims are placed between the window and the rough opening on both sides until the window is parallel. After securing the window and shims with a nail gun, the remaining gaps are filled with spray foam insulation specifically designed for windows and doors.
