Why the Figure 8 Follow-Through is the gold standard of climbing safety
In short: In rock climbing, a single knot is the literal line between a successful ascent and a life-threatening fall. The Figure 8 Follow-Through is favored not just for its strength, but for its visual clarity. If it doesn't look like an 8, it isn't safe.
The Figure 8 Follow-Through is a foundational climbing knot used to secure a climber to a rope. Its primary advantage is its high visibility; because the resulting shape is distinct, a climber or belayer can quickly verify that the knot is tied correctly. If the geometry of the knot deviates from a clear 8 shape, it indicates an error, and the climber is instructed to retie it immediately. The process begins by creating a 'bite'—a bend in the rope approximately an arm's length long. The tail is wrapped over this bite and threaded back through the loop to form the initial Figure 8. To secure the climber, the rope is threaded through the harness loops (waist and legs) and then 'traced' back through the initial knot. This creates a second Figure 8, resulting in a parallel-line structure that ensures the load is distributed evenly. Precision in 'dressing' the knot is critical for safety and functionality. Dressing involves tightening the knot so that the ropes lie parallel without unnecessary crosses, which can create weak points. A properly dressed knot is easier to untie after use and holds more securely under tension. Finally, a Double Fisherman's knot is often added as a backup safety knot to ensure the primary connection remains secure. When selecting the rope, the climber must ensure they tie into the end closest to the wall. The opposite end of the rope is reserved for the belayer. This orientation is essential for proper safety.
