The precision art of trimming skateboard grip tape for a professional finish
In short: Achieving a clean, professional look on a custom skateboard requires more than just a sharp blade. From strategic scoring to preventing edge peeling, the subtle techniques used to trim grip tape can determine whether your setup looks factory-fresh or amateurish.
The process begins with preparing the edges of the tape. To prevent the material from bunching or messing up the board's curves, you should first lift the grip away from the board's edge using a flat file. While a screwdriver or any metal object can work, a flat file is most effective. Making small cuts at the breaks—specifically where the board tips up—allows for a cleaner perimeter cut later.
When it comes to the actual trimming, the blade should be held at a 45-degree angle. Using a razor, you pull the blade towards yourself, following the scores you made earlier. It is vital to hold the excess tape to one side and keep the board steady with your arm to ensure a smooth cut. To protect the deck, avoid applying excessive pressure; you can use the rounded edges of the wood as a guide to keep the blade hovering just above the surface.
The final steps focus on durability and aesthetics. After trimming, you can fold the excess tape in half and use it as a makeshift sanding tool to smooth the edges, which helps prevent the tape from peeling. Scraping the edges near the graphic area also helps secure the tape. Finally, use a light touch to poke holes through the tape at the bolt locations, ensuring you do not push the tape upward, so your mounting hardware fits perfectly.
