In short: Repurposing an old timber adds character to a home, but mounting it safely requires precision. From navigating building codes to choosing the right masonry anchors, follow this expert-led process to ensure your historic piece stays securely in place.

The foundation of a successful mantel installation lies in adhering to safety standards and precise measurements. According to carpenter Nathan Gilbert, the mantel should be positioned approximately 55 to 56 inches from the floor, which represents the average height for such a feature. Crucially, building code requires the mantel to sit at least 12 inches above the top of the firebox.

Securing the beam to a brick fireplace requires a delicate touch to avoid structural damage. Rather than drilling through the bricks themselves, which is difficult and risky, you should aim for the mortar lines. By marking the center of the fireplace with bricks and measuring out to the nearest mortar line roughly 16 inches on each side, you create stable anchor points. After drilling pilot holes with a masonry bit, the process involves cleaning out debris and using epoxy to set threaded rods into the mortar.

The aesthetic finish of the beam is just as important as its stability. To maintain authenticity, you might use a two-person crosscut saw to reach your desired length, and a block plane to smooth five of the six edges, leaving the sixth edge flush against the wall. This allows you to preserve the original axe marks while creating a surface ready for finishing. A common choice for historic wood is tung oil, which celebrates imperfections without excessive darkening. After an initial 15-minute set, the beam is mounted by inserting epoxy into the beam's drilled holes and pushing it firmly onto the wall rods.
