The B pedal creates a musical state of perpetual longing
In short: In the world of pedal steel guitar, the B pedal is less of a simple note and more of a structural tension. By raising a single string a half step, it creates a suspended sound that feels like it is constantly reaching for a resolution it hasn't quite reached yet.
The B pedal functions by raising the G sharp string a half step to an A. In isolation, this creates a suspended chord. This specific musical state is defined by its inherent instability; the note wants to return to its original position (G) but sits halfway toward the resolution of a C chord. It provides roughly half of a full C chord, creating a 'hovery' sonic quality that serves as a primary tool for building tension in a progression.
To achieve a full four-chord resolution, the player must engage the A pedal in conjunction with the B pedal. This combination provides the full fourth of the root fret. For example, while playing in the key of G, using both pedals yields a C chord. Conversely, combining the B pedal with the C pedal produces a minor chord; in the key of G, this results in an A minor chord.
The pedal also offers a sophisticated method for creating dominant seventh chords without shifting hand positions. By lowering the Es and engaging the B pedal while staying on the G fret, a player can produce a seventh chord. This chord corresponds to the dominant seventh of the A and B position located two frets higher. This allows for complex harmonic movement—moving from suspension to a full fourth, then to a dominant seventh, and finally back to the root—all while maintaining a consistent physical grip on the instrument.
