Why gas pipe installation is strictly reserved for licensed professionals only
In short: Plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey explains the technical process of installing residential gas piping. This video outlines the essential sequence of connecting pipes from the meter to appliances and the critical safety testing procedures required before restoring gas flow.
Residential gas systems typically originate with one-inch pipes at the meter, branching into smaller diameters via T-fittings to reach individual appliances. Professionals use various pre-cut pipe lengths or custom-thread their own pipes using specialized tools. Every connection must be secured with pipe dope and proper gas fittings, always working outward from the source to ensure the threads align correctly.
Safety is paramount, and the process requires rigorous testing. Professionals use a manometer to lock in air pressure overnight; a drop in pressure indicates a leak. Once the work passes this test, a soap solution is applied as the gas is turned back on. If the solution bubbles, a leak is present. Because of these risks, all gas work must be performed by licensed professionals.
