How to reveal a secret message using milk and friction

How to Write a Secret Message in Milk | Science Projects · 3:25 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: You can create invisible ink using nothing more than a carton of milk and a pencil. By exploiting the physical properties of fat and evaporation, you can hide a message on paper that only reveals itself when you apply a specific scientific trigger.

The process relies on the distinct physical behaviors of milk components. When you write on paper with a milk-soaked Q-Tip, the liquid is absorbed into the fibers. Over time, the water content in the milk evaporates, turning into a gas and disappearing from the surface. However, the fat molecules in whole milk do not evaporate; they remain behind as a microscopic residue on the paper. To reveal the hidden text, you must introduce graphite to the equation. By rubbing a pencil against sandpaper or another pencil, you create friction that sheds graphite onto the paper. The liquid is sucked up by the paper fibers during the initial writing phase. You must allow the paper to sit for about thirty minutes before attempting the reveal. This duration ensures the liquid has had sufficient time to transition into a gas.

This creates a 'snowing' effect where the graphite initially appears to sit randomly across the surface, making the message difficult to see at first glance. The 'magic' happens because of the interaction between the graphite and the milk fat. As you rub the graphite across the paper with your finger, the particles naturally stick to the remaining fat deposits. This causes the hidden message to physically manifest, while the areas without milk fat remain clear. It is a practical demonstration of how different substances react to friction and adhesion. The friction from the sandpaper is extremely rough. This mechanical action causes the pencil material to fall onto the page. The graphite particles will initially seem to cover the entire surface randomly.

Note that this specific experiment requires whole milk. Using skim milk will result in a failed experiment because skim milk lacks the necessary fat content to act as an adhesive for the graphite. The experiment serves as a way to teach children about science. It can be used to create fun notes for parents or family members.
