How to master the hula hoop vertical step-through maneuver

To avoid frustration, you must first select a hoop with a diameter large enough to accommodate your height, ensuring you can move through the center without constant impact.

The vertical step-through is a technical maneuver that relies on the concept of 'space.' To begin, you must establish a reverse hand roll. This involves holding your hand in front of you with the thumb up, then rotating your body so the hoop moves backwards over your hand. As the hoop rotates, you must carefully observe the gaps created in front of your arm.

Once you identify the space, you rotate your palm downward to grab the backside of the hoop. This creates the necessary opening for your right leg to step through. After the right leg has passed through, you will find the hoop positioned between your legs. At this precise moment, you must reach with your left hand and grab the hoop as close to the bottom as possible.

To complete the sequence, you must maintain the reverse rotation as you step your left leg through the hoop, continuing the hand roll with your left hand. This process is most effective when practiced slowly to master the hand-off between sides. Once the transition between the right and left hand rolls becomes fluid, the entire vertical step-through becomes significantly smoother.

Equipment choice is a critical precursor to success. A 39-inch diameter hoop is generally recommended for beginners. However, if you are taller than average height, a larger diameter may be preferable to prevent the hoop from hitting you, which can lead to frustration during the learning process.
