The high cost of victory in a desperate planetary retreat

Killzone 3 Walkthrough / Evacuation Orders - Part 1: Escaping Visari's Palace · 8:06 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: When a military objective is achieved at the cost of a primary target's life, the transition from triumph to catastrophe is instantaneous. In the ruins of Visari's Palace, soldiers must navigate the fallout of an unauthorized killing while fleeing an encroaching fleet and an invisible, lethal threat.

The narrative of 'Evacuation Orders' centers on a fractured military unit forced into a chaotic retreat following the death of Visari. The tension is rooted in internal friction: Rico killed Visari against established protocols, leading to immediate threats of court-martial from his commanding officer. This creates a dual conflict—the external threat of an advancing Helghast cruiser fleet and the internal breakdown of discipline as soldiers grapple with the consequences of their actions. The commander explicitly threatens to have Rico and Valaskas shot for their insubordination. This internal strife occurs just as the general orders an emergency exit scenario. The unit is being pulled off the planet entirely.

The tactical situation is defined by extreme geographical constraints and environmental hazards. The unit is ordered to navigate through the Visari district to cross the Corinth River, heading east toward an extraction point described as a crater 'the size of Kansas' beneath a mushroom cloud. This scale highlights the devastation caused by 'Higs,' which serve as the primary atmospheric threat. These entities are depicted as capable of picking off soldiers one by one, necessitating stealth and rapid movement over conventional combat. The soldiers must use specialized equipment that are in short supply to combat the Higs. They aim to reach a specific extraction point located due east from the river. Sev identifies a road below as a potential path for the group.

The mechanics of this retreat emphasize a shift from offensive power to survivalist evasion. The unit is forced to abandon their position because they are being 'zeroed in' on by an advanced fleet. Every movement must be 'strictly by the numbers,' yet the reality on the ground involves lost convoy members and fragmented communication, forcing the remaining soldiers to rely on individual initiative to find paths toward the river. The convoy is split up after some members pass through a nearby square. One soldier reports that they have no knowledge of where the rest of the group went. The team must move quickly to avoid being spotted by enemies ahead.
