Why certain DIY plumbing repairs can destroy your home's foundation

In short: Most homeowners feel confident tackling a leaky faucet or a running toilet, but professional plumbers warn against three specific areas. Attempting to DIY these systems isn't just difficult; it can lead to catastrophic failures, such as exploding boilers or corroded pipes that cause water to pour through your ceiling.

While repairing a toilet is a standard DIY task, master plumbers identify three high-risk areas that should never be treated as hobbies: gas lines, boilers, and the use of chemical drain cleaners. These systems involve extreme pressures, intense heat, or highly corrosive substances that can cause irreparable damage if handled incorrectly by an amateur.

Chemical cleaners containing acids or lyes are particularly deceptive. While intended to clear clogs of hair or grease, these substances often fail to dissolve the obstruction. Instead, they sit in the pipes and eat away at the material itself. This is especially dangerous in older buildings with galvanized iron pipes that may be 60 or 70 years old. In these cases, the chemicals can weaken the factory seams of the pipe walls.

When a professional later attempts to clear the clog using a high-torque drain cleaning machine, the weakened pipe can easily fail. A snake operating at half a horsepower can destroy a compromised pipe wall, resulting in a multi-thousand dollar repair and water leaking through the ceiling of the floor below.

Boilers and gas lines present a different set of dangers. Boilers act as the heart of a building's heating system, circulating steam or hot water through radiators. Because they are equipped with complex safety controls designed to prevent explosions, tampering with them is extremely hazardous. Similarly, gas lines carry pressurized fuel; any error in connection or handling can lead to a house being blown off its foundation.
