Why your lightbulbs are secretly heating your home and draining your wallet

LED vs. CFL Lightbulbs | Green Living · 4:04 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: The classic Edison bulb provides a beautiful glow, but it comes with a hidden cost. Most of its energy is wasted as heat rather than light, driving up both your electricity bills and your air conditioning needs. Switching technologies could slash your lighting expenses by up to 90 percent.

The evolution of lighting technology is a journey from inefficiency to precision. The traditional incandescent bulb, often called the Edison bulb, is a long-standing technology that operates by converting energy into light. However, it is notoriously inefficient because a huge percentage of the energy it consumes is converted into heat rather than lumens. This thermal output can even increase the temperature of office environments, necessitating higher air conditioning usage.

Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) represent a middle-ground solution. They are much more efficient at converting energy into light and last significantly longer than incandescents. While they still generate some heat, they use far less energy to produce the same amount of brightness. For example, a 100-watt incandescent bulb's energy cost could drop to roughly $25 a year if replaced by a CFL, assuming a $100 annual baseline.

The most recent advancement is the Light Emitting Diode (LED). LEDs are highly efficient, using as little as 10 watts to match the output of a 100-watt incandescent. While high-end professional LEDs can get hot, standard residential bulbs rarely do. The primary challenge for consumers is the wide range of quality; while premium LEDs can last up to 50,000 hours, lower-quality versions might only reach 20,000 hours.

Despite a higher upfront cost, the long-term economics favor LEDs. An LED's energy cost could be as low as $10 a year for the same light output. Because an LED can last 20 to 50 times longer than an incandescent—which averages only about 1,000 hours—the frequency of replacement and the cost of energy make LEDs the superior choice for sustainable, cost-effective living.
