Why a model's headshot must do more than just show a pretty face
In short: A headshot is the first thing a client sees in a model's book or composite card. While actors use headshots to sell a specific character type, a model's image must capture a fleeting, intriguing mood. It is not about the best smile; it is about the connection in your eyes.
The primary goal of a model's headshot is to spark curiosity. According to Trudi Tapscott, the image serves as a hook that compels a client to look at the rest of your portfolio. You are not aiming to get booked based on a single photograph; rather, you are aiming to generate enough interest that a client wants to see more of your work. If that interest leads to further investigation, your chances of securing a booking increase significantly.
Unlike actor headshots, which often focus on a specific, repeatable character type—such as a person who exclusively plays Santa Claus—model headshots are defined by mood, lighting, and internal connection. A successful shot captures a moment where the eyes convey something specific, whether that is intelligence, allure, or sexiness. Because the frame is tight and focuses entirely on the face, the model must master the subtle movements of the head and neck to create a compelling image.
There is considerable variety in how these shots are composed. They are not always tight, close-up portraits; they may include the bust or waist, and hair can be styled in various ways. Whether the model is smiling or maintaining a moody expression, the image must represent the best version of the model at that time. This selection process is crucial, as the headshot effectively dictates which clients will be attracted to your look.
Achieving this level of presence is deceptively difficult. It requires comfort in front of the lens, which Tapscott suggests can be developed through practice. By experimenting in front of a mirror or having friends take pictures, models can learn to project a message even when they are not speaking. Ultimately, the photographer must be skilled at helping the model relax, as the camera captures a silent, yet powerful, communication between the subject and the viewer.
