The violin is built with a body of anatomical parts
In short: To master the violin, you must first understand its anatomy. The instrument is designed with components that mirror the human body, from a neck and shoulders to a tail. Understanding these specific parts—and the mechanics of the horsehair bow—is the first step toward musical mastery.
The violin is structured with a series of parts that resemble human anatomy, a design choice that helps beginners visualize the instrument's layout. The 'neck' supports the strings, while the 'shoulders' form the upper body. The bottom of the instrument is referred to as the 'tail,' and the chin rest provides a physical point of contact for the player's posture during performance.
The sound production of the violin relies on several specific mechanical components. The four strings are ordered from highest to lowest as E, A, D, and G. These strings are held up by the 'bridge,' which functions like a physical bridge to support the tension. Sound is projected through 'F holes' on the front of the body, which are shaped like the letter F. For tuning, the instrument uses 'pegs' for most strings, though a 'fine tuner' is typically reserved for the highest E string on a full-sized violin.
The bow is a complex tool of balance and tension. It is intentionally weighted toward the 'frog,' the heavy end where a screw mechanism controls the tension of the hair. This hair is made of actual horse hair. To preserve the instrument and the bow, the hair must be loosened when the violin is put away and tightened only when it is time to play. The bow also features a 'stick' made of wood, a 'tip' which is the lightest part of the tool, and a resting pad for the player's pointer finger.
