How Sapsiree Taerattanachai Became the First Player to Master Three Badminton Disciplines
In short: Sapsiree Taerattanachai is a singular force in badminton, holding the distinction of being the first athlete to secure Grand Prix Gold titles across singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. From her early days in Udon Thani to reaching world number one, her career is a masterclass in tactical versatility and resilience.
Born in 1992, Sapsiree Taerattanachai began playing badminton at age nine, initially joining her parents on the court for recreation. Her competitive fire was ignited by a difficult loss in her first tournament, leading her to train seriously by age 14. Her early promise was evident by 2009, when she earned bronze at the Asian and World Junior Championships. By 2010, she had secured gold at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, marking the start of a decorated career.
Sapsiree’s versatility is perhaps her most defining trait. In 2017, she achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first player to win Grand Prix Gold titles in all three badminton disciplines: women's singles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles. This achievement followed a strategic transition in 2015, where the Badminton Association of Thailand paired her with Dechapol Puavaranukroh to create a world-class mixed doubles unit. Their partnership proved exceptionally successful, culminating in a world number one ranking in December 2021 and a gold medal at the 2021 World Championships in Huelva, Spain.
Despite facing physical setbacks, including a knee injury during the 2017 SEA Games, Sapsiree has maintained a long and successful career. Her journey has included multiple Olympic appearances and numerous podium finishes at the Asian Games and World Championships. Following the 2024 Paris Olympics, the national association opted to restructure the Thai team, leading Sapsiree to begin a new chapter in mixed doubles with Pakkapon Teeraratsakul. Her enduring presence on the international circuit continues to influence the sport, as she remains a key figure in nurturing the next generation of Thai talent.
