A 30-year transit legacy is being rebuilt by public input
In short: South Yorkshire is preparing to replace its entire Supertram fleet. The current Supertram vehicles have been in service for more than 30 years. Transport for City Regions (TCR) funding stream provides the capital for acquiring this updated vehicle collection. The procurement process will involve a tender where manufacturers will be invited to bid on delivering the new trams based on specific requirements gathered from the public.
Public engagement is a core pillar of this transition. Residents are currently being invited to share feedback on specific improvements, including step-free access, seating layouts, air conditioning, and space for bicycles and pushchairs. This feedback will directly inform the technical specifications before the tender begins. The project represents a shift toward a more sustainable and accessible system, moving away from the limitations of the aging current fleet to create a network that the region can be proud of for generations.
