In short: Futurist Ray Kurzweil predicts that by 2045, we will reach a 'Singularity' where machine intelligence becomes infinitely more powerful than all human intelligence combined. This isn't just about smarter computers; it is a predicted merger where humans transcend their biological bodies to become something entirely new.

The foundation of Kurzweil's prediction is the Law of Accelerating Returns. He argues that evolutionary progress is super-exponential because the results of one stage are reinvested into the next. For example, the computer chip industry experiences 'double' exponential growth because the fruits of previous innovation make it an attractive investment, which in turn fuels even faster development. Kurzweil suggests that while growth may appear to level off—moving from one 'S curve' to another, such as the shift from vacuum tubes to transistors—new paradigms like nanotubes or quantum computing will ensure the acceleration continues.

To reach the Singularity, Kurzweil identifies computational capacity as a primary bottleneck. He estimates the human brain operates at 10^16 calculations per second with 10^13 bits of memory. According to his projections, a $1,000 investment in 2020 would secure processing capabilities matching one human brain, whereas by 2045, that figure would procure a billion-fold increase over the collective power of every human mind. This power will be used to reverse-engineer the human brain, imaging it from the inside using nanobots to create functional models of synapses and sub-cellular components.

The ultimate goal is the 'Merger of Human Technology with Human Intelligence.' Kurzweil envisions a gradual conversion where humans augment their brains with neural implants, eventually allowing for the 'uploading' of mental processes onto computational substrates. This transition is framed as a spiritual undertaking; he argues that because evolution moves toward greater complexity and beauty, the move away from biological roots is a progression toward a conception of God. In this future, humans may eventually alter their physical manifestation at will, saturating the universe with intelligence.

Kurzweil acknowledges the risks of such power, including out-of-control AI or pathogens. He argues that the best defense is not just technology, but a societal commitment to values of liberty and tolerance, as nonbiological intelligence will inevitably reflect the values embedded in the society that creates it.
