Engineering a home for an amputee veteran after Iraq
In short: This video previews a unique collaboration between This Old House and Homes for Our Troops. It documents the creation of a custom-built residence designed specifically for a wounded Army Staff Sergeant.
In July 2003, an RPG strike in Iraq caused Army Staff Sergeant Matthew DeWitt to lose his two arms; this initiative aims to modify a residence for him. The goal is to create a space where he can heal and pursue his interests as a gardener and cyclist with his wife and two sons.
The residence will feature over 155 special adaptations, including touchless faucets, keyless entry, raised countertops, and accessible storage. The full cast of This Old House provides consultation on how to modify standard building products to meet these specific accessibility requirements.
