How to transform scrap lumber into a custom tool storage cabinet
In short: You don't need a massive budget to organize a professional workspace. By repurposing leftover materials from previous projects, you can construct a custom storage solution that fits your specific tools perfectly, using nothing more than basic woodworking techniques and some clever jigs.
In this DIY project from This Old House, general contractor Tom Silva demonstrates how to build a functional tool storage shelf using leftover lumber. The construction begins with cutting plywood into five sheets to frame a cabinet. For this specific build, Silva constructed a unit measuring 3 feet by 4 feet by 1 foot. The design utilizes a combination of materials, such as 3/4-inch oak plywood, 1x12-inch select pine, and 1/4-inch birch plywood, which can be sourced from home centers if a scrap pile is unavailable.
A key feature of this shelf is the specialized bottom layer designed to hold tools by their handles. To create these 'fingers,' Silva suggests marking evenly spaced locations on the bottom shelf. To ensure a clean finish, a forstner bit is used to drill holes at the peak of each finger, creating a rounded edge. To prevent wood blowout during drilling, a sacrificial board should be placed underneath, while a second board acts as a straight edge on top to maintain consistent depth across all fingers.
The assembly process emphasizes customization and efficiency. The interior shelves can be set at varying heights to accommodate the unique dimensions of different tools. To secure the structure, Silva recommends using wood screws and simple butt joints, which are sufficient for garage storage. For added stability, the builder can cut dados into the sides of two shelves simultaneously to accept 1/4-inch plywood dividers. Finally, a back made from leftover plywood completes the cabinet, resulting in a zero-cost organizational tool.
This method highlights a fundamental principle of efficient workshop management: utilizing the remnants of previous builds to create new, purposeful equipment.
