How pedals and levers transform a simple steel guitar into a versatile machine

In short: The original steel guitar was a minimalist instrument, limited by fixed tunings and a handful of strings. To overcome these musical constraints, players added a complex system of pedals and knee levers, allowing them to shift chords instantly without ever moving their hands.

The simplest iteration of the steel guitar was a basic setup consisting of a neck, tuning pegs, a pick-up, and strings. Players used a tone bar—often a heavy piece of stainless steel, or even a jackknife or bottle—to slide across the strings. In the 1920s, this setup was particularly popular for playing Hawaiian music, but it faced a significant limitation: because the instrument was locked into a single open tuning, musicians quickly ran out of playable keys.

To gain more flexibility, the pedal steel guitar was developed. This evolution introduced a mechanical system where pressing a foot pedal or a knee lever engages rods that connect to the bridge, also known as the changer. These components can increase or release tension on a single string or a group of up to three strings simultaneously. This mechanism allows a player to transition between chords instantly; for example, a single E chord can be transformed into an A chord simply by activating a pedal.

The instrument's design is highly specialized. Unlike a standard guitar, the frets are merely painted-on guidelines used for visual reference; the player actually acts as the fret by using the tone bar. To ensure the strings move smoothly during these pitch shifts, the neck features small rollers at the nut to prevent the strings from sticking. This combination of mechanical tension and manual sliding allows for nearly universal musical possibilities, depending on the specific combination of levers and pedals used.
