Anorexia is a severe mental health condition, not just an eating habit

In short: While often associated with weight loss, anorexia nervosa is a complex psychiatric illness where negative thoughts about body image take over a person's entire life. It can lead to systemic organ damage and has one of the highest mortality rates among all mental health disorders.

Anorexia nervosa is defined by four cardinal diagnostic criteria in the DSM-IV: an inability to maintain a medically appropriate body weight (typically around 85 percent of ideal weight), an intense fear of gaining weight despite being underweight, a distorted perception of one's body shape or weight, and a physical state of starvation. In women, this often manifests as amenorrhea—the absence of three or more consecutive menstrual cycles—though some patients may remain on birth control while in a starved state.

The condition is not limited to those who are visibly underweight; "atypical anorexia" refers to individuals who meet the criteria but do not yet have a low body mass index (BMI). While it most commonly affects young women starting in their mid-teens, men and boys can also suffer from the illness. Behavioral symptoms often include rigid rituals like cutting food into tiny bites, strict calorie counting—sometimes as low as 500 to 700 calories a day—and excessive exercise or purging behaviors.

The medical consequences are severe and potentially irreversible. Starvation affects nearly every organ and tissue in the body, leading to cardiac issues, electrolyte imbalances, and permanent organ damage. The mortality rate is notably high, estimated at five percent per decade for unremitted anorexia nervosa. Because it involves deep-seated psychological complications like severe depression and suicidal urges, recovery requires specialized treatment from experts who understand both the physical and mental dimensions of the disorder.
