In remote play mode, the Vita essentially becomes the primary display, allowing you to navigate the PS4's menus and launch full games as if you were sitting in front of the television.

The connection logic follows a specific hierarchy to ensure the best experience. The system first attempts a direct connection to the console, which is ideal for nearby play as it minimizes latency. If a direct link isn't possible, it seeks a connection via a local Wi-Fi network. As a final resort, it can connect over the internet, provided the PS4 is configured for internet access and is left in standby mode. Because the technology streams live video game data, a high-quality connection is vital, as even minor latency can impact the fluidity of the experience.

Setting up the link involves a pairing process similar to Bluetooth. After enabling 'Remote Play' and 'Connect directly to the PS4 Vita' in the console's connection settings, users generate an 8-digit code. This code is entered into the 'PS4 Link' app on the Vita to establish the bond. However, users must adapt to a slight shift in ergonomics: the Vita's buttons map differently than the DualShock 4. For example, the Vita's Start and Select buttons function as the Share and Options buttons on the console, requiring a brief period of muscle memory adjustment.
