Wiccans do not worship anyone or anything in the traditional sense

Who Do Wiccans Worship? | Wicca · 3:52 · Video: Howcast · Watch at the source

In short: If you ask a Wiccan who they worship, the answer might surprise you. Rather than pleading with a distant, transcendent deity for intervention, practitioners focus on reverence and communion with a sacredness that is already present within the natural world.

For Wiccans, the concept of worship is often viewed as a misnomer. Traditional worship typically involves kneeling before a transcendent power that exists beyond the self, begging for intervention. In contrast, Wicca is a spiritual path centered on reverence, respect, and living in harmony with nature. To practitioners, nature is not just a setting, but an embodiment of the divine—the 'gown' of the goddess or the 'dance' of the god.

While Wiccans may use anthropomorphic terms to describe their relationships with deities like Persephone, Diana, or the Green Man, the divine is ultimately considered a mystery that transcends gender. It is seen as a unity expressing itself through infinite diversity, present in every aspect of creation. This differs from some New Age philosophies by rejecting the idea that individuals are the sole creators of their reality; instead, Wiccans view themselves as a single strand in a sacred web.

Historically, Wicca emerged as a modern Pagan movement, drawing inspiration from the pre-Christian traditions of Northern and Western Europe. Its development is closely linked to Gerald Brosseau Gardner (1884–1964), a retired British civil servant who returned to Britain in the 1930s. Gardner claimed to have discovered a group of witches near England’s New Forest in 1939, though historians debate the existence of this group. Following the 1951 repeal of Britain’s witchcraft laws, Gardner and high priestess Doreen Valiente (1922–1999) helped develop Gardnerian Wicca. While many early practitioners claimed to be reviving a clandestine, centuries-old religion, historians dismissed these claims following research in the 1960s and '70s.
