The demonization of marijuana was a calculated tool of colonial and industrial control
In short: Why did a plant used for millennia as a medicine become a criminalized pariah? The answer isn't just about the drug itself; it is a story of religious persecution, xenophobic policing, and a massive industrial power play that shaped modern law.
The roots of marijuana's 'demonic' status trace back to the 1500s. When Spanish Conquistadors encountered indigenous people using psychoactive substances, they viewed these practices as heretical. Because these rituals looked like a defiance of Catholic communion, the Church used the Inquisition to brand them as demonic. During this era, the Spanish also introduced cannabis for industrial use, specifically for the ropes and rigging of the Spanish Armada. It is possible that some of this industrial cannabis mutated into more psychoactive varieties, which were then folded into indigenous systems of use, further cementing the 'foreign' and 'sinful' label.
By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the narrative shifted toward xenophobia. As waves of Mexican immigrants arrived in the United States, authorities began targeting them for using 'foreign' substances. Laws passed in El Paso, Texas, and other border states at the turn of the century were specifically designed to control Mexican populations who were often working low-wage jobs. This period transformed a religious stigma into a tool for racial and social policing.
The final blow came from the boardroom. By the 1920s and 30s, cannabis was becoming a viable industrial product for plastics and fuels. In 1938, Popular Mechanics even highlighted it as a 'New Billion Dollar crop.' However, the government moved to ban it in 1937. Many historians believe this was a move by the petrochemical industry to eliminate natural competition in favor of synthetic routes. The subsequent Marijuana Tax Act specifically targeted the large-scale farms developing hemp, effectively dismantling a natural industrial resource to favor corporate interests.
