The secret puppetry and biological oddities of the alien ALF
In short: Beyond the sarcastic, cat-eating extraterrestrial of 1980s television lay a complex web of secret production techniques and bizarre physiological lore. From hidden floor trapdoors and remote-controlled facial features to a body capable of surviving explosions, the character was a masterpiece of puppetry and imaginative biological engineering.
To maintain the illusion of a living extraterrestrial, creator Paul Fusco was notoriously secretive. He refused to acknowledge the puppet was anything other than an alien, even during production. The character was operated by a three-person team: Fusco inserted his left hand into the head to control the mouth, while a second puppeteer, Lisa Buckley, controlled the left hand from beneath floor trapdoors. A third puppeteer, Bob Fappiano, operated the eyes and facial features via remote control.
The physical performance was also a feat of endurance. To protect the primary puppet from wear and tear, the team rehearsed with a crude version nicknamed "RALF" (Rehearsal Alien Life Form). During the first season, Hungarian actor Michu Meszaros wore a full-body costume for wide shots, though his services were eventually cut due to high costs. Even the voice was a calculated evolution; Fusco originally tried to mimic Rowlf the Dog, but the strain on his vocal cords forced him to develop the lighter, iconic voice the character is known for today.
The show's lore established ALF as a biological marvel. He was depicted as significantly denser and hardier than humans, surviving close-range explosions with minimal damage. He asserted that his eight stomachs constituted about 80% of the main organs of a Melmacian, while his heart sat within his head's upper right section. Marvel comics showed his body could build muscle quickly to match Grey Hulk's power, whereas different tales featured him becoming unseen by consuming sponges.
