Blood sport first meant hunting on horseback before it meant bear-baiting
The label blood sport covers anything staged for sport or spectacle that ends in bloodshed, from Roman gladiators to cockfights. It started life describing mounted hunts, spread to baiting and forced animal combat, drew fire from Victorian reformers, and now shapes whole genres of film and video games.
According to the writer Tanner Carson, the phrase was first used for hunts in which riders actively chased their quarry, such as fox hunting or hare coursing. Before guns, a hunter armed with a spear or bow might only wound an animal and then pursue it to finish the job at close quarters, as in medieval boar hunts. Later the term stretched to cover spectacles like bull-baiting, bear-baiting and cockfighting, and newer forms such as dog fighting and rat-baiting, often using animals bred for the purpose.
Opposition has a long pedigree. In Victorian Britain, reformers including Henry Stephens Salt attacked such pastimes on ethical and animal welfare grounds. Restrictions now exist across much of the world, although some practices, bullfighting and cockfighting among them, remain legal in certain places under varying controls. Defenders usually appeal to tradition. Bullfighting enthusiasts reject the word sport altogether and speak of a cultural ritual, sometimes a tragic spectacle, since the bull is usually killed and the matador always risks death. Critics apply the label to trophy hunting and fox hunting, and anglers once used it jokingly about their own hobby.
The same argument is playing out over Varzajang, a bull-against-bull contest held in Gilan province in northern Iran. Local supporters call it heritage. The Iranian sociologist Hossein Solati and colleagues, in studies published between 2023 and 2025, argue that calling it a game hides animal suffering and gambling, trace its shift from a pastoral custom into a commercial spectacle, and examine how women are excluded from it.
Fiction has always been drawn to the theme. The 1932 film The Most Dangerous Game, about a man who hunts shipwrecked strangers, spawned a small genre that later included the Predator franchise, and dystopias such as The Hunger Games imagine blood sports in future societies. Games followed early: Exidy's 1976 Death Race caused a moral panic, and the film Battle Royale inspired the survival genre popularised by Fortnite and PUBG.
