Bradley Barcola went from Lyon fringe player to France's fastest scorer in 90 years
In January 2023 Bradley Barcola was so short of minutes at Lyon that he nearly went on loan to St. Gallen in Switzerland. The deal collapsed, he forced his way into the team, and within three years he had two Champions League titles with Paris and a record twelve-second goal for France.
Barcola was born on 2 September 2002 to a French mother and a Togolese father, and holds both nationalities; his brother Malcolm plays for Togo. He joined Lyon at eight, scored freely for its under-19s in the UEFA Youth League, and signed a first professional deal in September 2021. His debut came on 4 November 2021, when he came on in the 81st minute against Sparta Prague in the Europa League and set up a goal.
Opportunities stayed scarce until early 2023, when a loan move fell through because Alexandre Lacazette was injured and Karl Toko Ekambi had left, leaving Lyon short up front. Barcola seized the chance and finished the season leading the club in assists. On 31 August 2023 Paris Saint-Germain signed him for a reported 45 million euros on a five-year contract, and his first appearance, against his old club, made him the 500th player ever to turn out for PSG.
In Paris he flourished. He helped overturn a first-leg deficit against Barcelona in the 2024 Champions League quarter-final, assisting Ousmane Dembélé, and became part of the side that won the Champions League as part of a treble in 2025, then retained the trophy in 2026. On 31 August 2026 Liverpool paid a reported 106 million pounds to bring him to the Premier League, keeping the number 29 shirt.
For France he debuted on 5 June 2024 against Luxembourg, assisting Kylian Mbappé, and went to Euro 2024. On 6 September 2024 he scored against Italy after just 12 seconds, France's fastest goal in 90 years. At the 2026 World Cup he scored against Senegal, Sweden and, in the third-place match, England. Naturally right-footed, he likes starting on the left so he can cut inside, and has named Cristiano Ronaldo and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as inspirations.
