In short: The Brisbane Broncos aren't just a powerhouse of Australian rugby league; they are a unique financial entity. As the only sports club listed on the ASX, they operate at the intersection of elite athletics and public equity, balancing a massive fan base with the pressures of the open market.

Founded in April 1987, the Brisbane Broncos emerged as a strategic response to the expansion of the VFL (now AFL) into Queensland. The Queensland Rugby League (QRL) sought a franchise specifically to stifle the publicity of the Brisbane Bears. The club's creation was fueled by Queensland's success during the 1980s. It also drew from the early growth of the State of Origin series. Furthermore, the QRL leveraged a combined Brisbane Rugby League team that had participated in mid-week contests.

To secure the license, the QRL chose a bid from former players Barry Maranta and Paul Morgan, who were required to pay a $500,000 fee to enter the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) competition. The inaugural roster featured high-profile names like Wally Lewis and Wayne Bennett. They also signed notable players such as Chris Johns and Allan Langer. Their debut season in 1988 saw them defeat the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles by 44–10.

The club quickly became a dominant force, winning seven premierships across various eras, including the Super League and the modern National Rugby League (NRL). They are notable for being the first team to win a unified competition from 5th place in 1993, a feat not repeated until 2018–19. Their history is marked by high-profile leadership and The club's 1995 move to the Super League saw them sign stars like Anthony Mundine and Gorden Tallis. They also won the only edition of the World Club Challenge by defeating St Helens 66–12. In 2024, the team reported a massive membership of 53,672. Most recently, they secured their seventh title during the 2025 NRL season.
