Daniel Sturridge scored in the Youth Cup, FA Cup and Premier League in one season
In 2007-08, a teenage Daniel Sturridge found the net in the FA Youth Cup, the FA Cup and the Premier League within a single season, something no other player has ever done. He went on to lift the Champions League with Chelsea and to form a prolific strike partnership with Luis Suárez at Liverpool.
Born in Birmingham on 1 September 1989, he is the son of the footballer Mike Sturridge and nephew of Dean and Simon Sturridge, and all four of his grandparents were born in Jamaica. He started at seven with Cadbury Athletic, joined Aston Villa's academy, moved to Coventry City in 2002 and to Manchester City in 2003, a switch that cost City £30,000 in compensation. At the Nike Cup, the world's largest under-15 tournament, he finished as top scorer and player of the tournament, a double only Carlos Tevez had managed.
He scored six goals on City's run to the 2006 FA Youth Cup final, which they lost to Liverpool, and won the competition two years later. When his contract ran out he joined Chelsea in July 2009; a tribunal set the fee, which with add-ons eventually reached £8.3 million. A loan at Bolton in 2011 brought eight goals in 12 games, including goals in each of his first four matches, making him only the sixth player to do that for a Premier League club. Back at Chelsea he won the FA Cup and, as an unused substitute, the 2012 Champions League.
He moved to Liverpool in January 2013 and struck 21 league goals in 2013-14, second only to Suárez's 31, as the team passed 100 for the season. Injuries then wrecked the next two campaigns. He opened the scoring in the 2016 Europa League final, which Liverpool lost to Sevilla, and belonged to the squad that won the 2019 Champions League under Jürgen Klopp before spells with Trabzonspor and Perth Glory.
He earned 26 England caps, appearing at the 2014 World Cup and Euro 2016, and represented Great Britain at the 2012 Olympics. Since 2023 he has been a studio pundit on Sky Sports.
