Released by Chelsea at 14, Declan Rice became a £100 million midfielder
Chelsea let Declan Rice go at 14, seven years after he joined their academy as a small boy. West Ham took him on after a spring trial, and a decade later Arsenal paid a club record £100 million for him, making him the joint most expensive English player ever.
Born in Kingston upon Thames on 14 January 1999, he first kicked a ball around at a local adventure playground. At Chelsea he befriended Mason Mount, a future England teammate. At West Ham his academy coach credited sheer persistence for his rise; he turned professional in December 2015 and made his senior bow as a 91st-minute substitute at Burnley in May 2017.
In December 2018 he became the first teenager since Michael Carrick to reach 50 West Ham appearances, and the next month scored his first goal, the winner against Arsenal. He played every league minute of 2019-20, ranking among the top five in the division for tackles and interceptions. Made captain after Mark Noble retired in 2022, he led the club to the 2023 Europa Conference League, beating Fiorentina 2-1 in the final, and was named the competition's player of the season. Only Bobby Moore and Billy Bonds had previously captained West Ham to a major trophy.
His father's parents came from Cork, so he first played for the Republic of Ireland, earning a senior debut in March 2018. In February 2019 he chose England instead, and FIFA confirmed the switch; he was the first to represent both countries since Jack Reynolds in the 1890s, and later revealed he had received death threats online. He played every game as England reached the Euro 2020 final and finished runner-up again at Euro 2024.
Arsenal signed him in July 2023 after 245 West Ham games. In April 2025 he scored two direct free kicks in a 3-0 Champions League quarter-final win over Real Madrid, the first player to do that in a knockout match, and he was central to the side that won the 2025-26 Premier League, Arsenal's first title in 22 years.
