The independent artist who cracked the code to digital stardom
In short: Emiway Bantai didn't find fame through traditional gatekeepers. By bypassing the mainstream industry, he built a massive, die-hard fandom entirely online. From a rejected reality TV contestant to a global collaborator with Snoop Dogg, his journey is a blueprint for the modern independent music era.
Born Bilal Shaikh in 1995, Bantai's path to the spotlight was unconventional. After dropping out of school and working as a helper at the Hard Rock Cafe in Mumbai, he began experimenting with hip-hop. His stage name is a tribute to his idols, Eminem and Lil Wayne, while 'Bantai' reflects the Mumbai slang for 'friend' or 'brother.' His early career was marked by a pivot from English to Hindi rap following his father's advice, leading to his 2015 breakthrough hit 'Aur Bantai.' Bantai is noted by Rolling Stone India and Platform magazine for his ability to build a loyal following solely through social media. This digital-first strategy allowed him to achieve massive scale, such as his 2020 track 'Firse Machayenge' garnering 315 million views and peaking at No.
7 on India's top YouTube music videos. His influence expanded into the mainstream through his role as a script consultant for the film 'Gully Boy' and his appearances in Times Square for his albums 'Malum Hai Na' (2021) and 'King of the Streets' (2023). Beyond personal branding, Bantai has established a structural footprint in the industry by founding Bantai Records in 2021. The label emphasizes 'complete creative freedom' for artists, a stark contrast to traditional studio systems. His career is also defined by high-profile 'beefs'—intense lyrical feuds with rappers like Raftaar and KR$NA—which serve as a core mechanic of hip-hop culture, driving engagement and defining his position as a dominant figure in the Indian rap scene.
