Harvey Nichols, the Knightsbridge linen shop that grew into a luxury chain

Harvey Nichols began in 1831 as a modest linen shop run by Benjamin Harvey in Knightsbridge. When he died, his widow Anne teamed up with their son-in-law James Nichols, and the pair's combined names still hang over a flagship a short stroll from Harrods, its great local rival.

Anne Harvey took charge after her husband's death in 1850 and formed Harvey Nichols & Co with James Nichols. In 1889 the original premises were knocked down, and a new department store designed by C. W. Stephens rose in stages until 1894. Debenhams bought the business in 1920, and in 1985 the Burton Group swallowed Debenhams along with it. Hong Kong entrepreneur Dickson Poon then paid £53.6 million for the store in October 1991, and his company Dickson Concepts owned it for the next three decades.

Expansion beyond the capital began in 1996. That year brought the OXO Tower restaurant overlooking the Thames and a 60,000 square foot store in the Victorian arcades of Leeds, nicknamed the Knightsbridge of the North. Scotland followed with a £32 million store on St Andrew Square in Edinburgh, opened in the summer of 2002. Manchester got a 100,000 square foot shop the same year on New Cathedral Street, next door to Selfridges, as part of the city's rebuilding after the 1996 bombing. Birmingham, Liverpool and eventually sites in Hong Kong and the Gulf joined the list, making 11 locations in all.

The brand's fame reached well beyond shoppers. Through the 1990s and 2000s it was name-checked again and again in the BBC comedy Absolutely Fabulous, with Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley. Controversies came too: in 2013 the stores resumed selling fur after a decade-long embargo, drawing heavy criticism, while insisting their furs were ethically sourced.

Leadership stayed remarkably stable. Joseph Wan served as chief executive for twenty-one years before retiring in March 2014, and later managers took annual revenue to £229 million by March 2019, up nine percent. Kate Phelan became the first creative director in November 2024. Frasers Group completed a purchase of the business on 13 August 2026.
