Jürgen Klopp had fourth-division feet but a head built for management
Jürgen Klopp once summed up his playing days by saying he had fourth-division feet and a first-division head. The self-assessment proved accurate. A journeyman defender at Mainz became the manager who won titles in Dortmund, ended a long wait at Liverpool, and in 2026 took charge of Germany.
Born in Stuttgart in June 1967 and raised in the Black Forest village of Glatten, Klopp once hoped to become a doctor but doubted he was clever enough. He spent 1990 to 2001 at Mainz, first up front and later in defence, while earning a sports science diploma in Frankfurt with a thesis on walking. A trial beside Andreas Möller convinced him he was playing a different game from the truly gifted, so he studied his coaches instead.
When Mainz sacked their manager in February 2001, the club handed the job to its own player. He won six of his first seven games, survived relegation, and after two near misses took Mainz into the Bundesliga for the first time in 2004, despite the league's smallest budget and stadium. At Dortmund from 2008 he built the youngest side ever to win the German title, in 2010–11, then retained it with a record 81 points and added the club's first domestic double. His team reached the 2013 Champions League final, only to lose to Bayern, who had just poached their playmaker Mario Götze.
Liverpool hired him in 2015. The 2019 Champions League brought the club its sixth European crown. A season earlier his side collected 97 points and still finished second, a record for runners-up; the next campaign they took Liverpool's first Premier League title with a club-best 99. He was named FIFA's coach of the year in 2019 and 2020 and left in 2024 after a final League Cup.
His method is Gegenpressing: the moment the ball is lost, hunt it down rather than retreat. He calls it heavy metal football, credits Arrigo Sacchi and his old Mainz coach Wolfgang Frank as influences, and is famous for wild touchline celebrations.
