Kane Williamson began with two ducks and became New Zealand's greatest batsman
Kane Williamson's one-day international career opened with a duck on his ninth ball, then another on his second ball the following match. He went on to score more Test runs than any other New Zealander, reach number one in the world rankings, and captain his country to its first global title in over two decades.
Born in Tauranga on 8 August 1990, Williamson came from a sporting family: his father played club cricket, his mother represented her region at basketball, and three older sisters played volleyball, while his twin brother Logan is a minute younger. He played senior representative cricket at 14 and first-class cricket at 16, reportedly scoring 40 centuries before leaving Tauranga Boys' College. At 17 he captained New Zealand's under-19 side at the 2008 World Cup in Malaysia.
Recovery from those early ducks was quick. His first ODI hundred, against Bangladesh in Dhaka in October 2010, made him the youngest centurion in New Zealand history, and on Test debut at Ahmedabad that November he made 131 against India. On 31 December 2020 he reached a rating of 890, overtaking Steve Smith and Joe Root as the top Test batsman. Martin Crowe foresaw the dawn of perhaps the country's greatest ever batsman.
As captain in all formats, Williamson led New Zealand to the 2019 World Cup final, winning player of the tournament, and in June 2021 to victory in the first World Test Championship, the side's first global trophy since the 2000 ICC KnockOut. He also won the ICC Spirit of Cricket award in 2018 and was the only New Zealander in the ICC Test team of the decade.
Franchise cricket took him everywhere. He was part of Sunrisers Hyderabad's 2016 IPL title, topped the 2018 season with 735 runs as captain, and helped Rajshahi Warriors win the Bangladesh Premier League in 2026. He quit international cricket on 12 June 2026 after scoring 0 and 18 against England at Lord's, saying he wanted to leave on his own terms.
