In short: Leonardo Araújo was a versatile playmaker whose technical vision made him a staple of Brazil's 1994 World Cup winning squad. Yet, he is also remembered for a violent moment that resulted in one of the longest suspensions in tournament history, forever linking his name to both brilliance and brutality.

Born in Niterói, Brazil, Leonardo began his career with Flamengo in 1987. A versatile left-footed talent, he was capable of playing as a left-back, winger, or attacking midfielder. His most successful period as a player came at AC Milan, where he served as a 'trequartista'—an advanced playmaker. His technical intelligence and vision allowed him to create chances for teammates while also providing powerful long-range strikes and set-piece expertise.

His international career was defined by high-level success and a notorious disciplinary incident. He was a key member of the 1994 World Cup winning side, but his tournament was cut short after he elbowed American midfielder Tab Ramos in the head. The resulting skull fracture for Ramos led to a four-match suspension for Leonardo. At the time, this was the second-longest ban in World Cup history, surpassed only by Mauro Tassotti's eight-game suspension in the same tournament.

Transitioning into management, Leonardo became a significant figure in Italian and French football. While leading Milan, he introduced a unique 4–2–1–3 formation, before moving to Inter Milan and establishing a 2011 Serie A milestone by securing 33 points across 13 matches. He also served as sporting director for both Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan, overseeing high-profile transfers before joining the Italian Football Federation as an advisor in 2026.

Despite his accolades, his career was often hampered by injuries and administrative hurdles. He was famously exempted from a mandatory UEFA Pro license to manage in Serie A because he was a World Cup winner as a player. His legacy remains a complex mix of creative mastery on the pitch and a tumultuous journey through the corridors of football power.
