How a single injury ended the career of a San Jose Sharks captain
In short: Logan Couture was a cornerstone of the San Jose Sharks for over a decade, serving as their captain and a prolific scorer. However, a persistent and painful condition known as osteitis pubis eventually forced the Canadian center into retirement, ending a career defined by both high-level production and physical resilience.
Born in Guelph, Ontario, in 1989, Logan Couture's ascent through professional hockey was marked by significant milestones. After being selected ninth overall in the 2007 NHL entry draft, he spent his entire National Hockey League career with the San Jose Sharks. His rookie season in 2010–11 was particularly notable; he recorded 32 goals and 56 points, earning a nomination for the Calder Memorial Trophy and setting a franchise record for rookie goals.
Couture's leadership was solidified when he was named an alternate captain before the 2015–16 season, eventually becoming the team's captain ahead of the 2019–20 season. His ability to perform under pressure was evident during the 2016 Stanley Cup playoffs, where he led all players with 30 points and 20 assists. He also achieved a personal scoring peak during the 2018–19 season, tallying 70 points.
The twilight of his career was dictated by physical struggle rather than a lack of skill. Following a series of injuries, including a broken fibula and an arterial bleed in 2015–16, Couture faced his most significant challenge with osteitis pubis. This groin and pelvic condition caused him to miss nearly the entire 2023–24 season, appearing in only six games. In April 2025, he announced his retirement, citing the inability to skate or maintain consistent training due to the ongoing pain. Although he stays on the Sharks' injured reserve list until his 2027 contract ends, his professional playing days are over.
