From rookie struggles to breaking records on the MotoGP circuit
In short: Marco Bezzecchi's ascent to the pinnacle of motorcycle racing is a study in persistence. After navigating a difficult transition into the premier class, he eventually broke a legendary record for consecutive laps led, proving that technical mastery and mental grit are the ultimate fuels for speed.
Bezzecchi's journey to the MotoGP podium was not a linear path. After winning the Italian Moto3 championship in 2015, he faced a challenging transition period. His 2017 rookie season in Moto3 was slow, yielding only four points until a maiden podium in Japan. He then moved to Moto2, where his 2019 rookie year at Red Bull KTM Tech3 was equally difficult, with only four points scored across the entire season.
The turning point arrived in 2020 when Bezzecchi joined the Sky Racing Team VR46. This move catalyzed his development, leading to a successful season where he helped secure the team's championship and finished fourth in the rider's standings. By 2021, he had refined his skills further, finishing third in the championship with 214 points. These years served as the essential foundation for his move to the premier MotoGP class in 2022.
Entering the premier class with the Mooney VR46 Racing Team, Bezzecchi secured his first win in 2023 at the Argentine Republic Grand Prix in rainy conditions—a victory that also marked the first win for the VR46 Racing Team. His career reached a new milestone in 2026 when, while leading the U.S. Grand Prix, he broke Jorge Lorenzo's record for the most consecutive laps led. Despite a high-profile incident involving a marshal at the 2026 Czech Republic Grand Prix, Bezzecchi maintained his form, securing a lead over teammate Jorge Martín by May 2026.
