The game engine that turned role-playing into collaborative storytelling
In short: In the world of tabletop RPGs, some systems focus on complex math and rigid rules. Powered by the Apocalypse (PbtA) does the opposite. It prioritizes narrative flow, using a streamlined framework that empowers players to co-create the world in real-time, shifting the focus from 'crunch' to conversation.
Developed by Meguey and Vincent Baker for the 2010 game Apocalypse World, PbtA is less a rigid set of rules and more a design philosophy. While it features distinct mechanics—most notably the use of two six-sided dice (2d6) to resolve actions—the Bakers define PbtA primarily as a 'mark of ludic etymology.' To use the label, a designer must simply cite Apocalypse World as a significant influence. This open approach has fostered a thriving community where over 800 products were tagged as PbtA on Itch.io as of April 2023.
The core of the system lies in 'moves.' Instead of exhaustive lists of every possible action, characters have a default selection of moves based on their setting. Take a fantasy hero with a 'hack and slash' ability or a wasteland survivor using 'seize by force' as examples. Once activated, the 2d6 result dictates whether the action results in a miss, partial success, or total success.
Crucially, a 'miss' is rarely a dead end; it is designed to move the narrative forward, often resulting in a negative outcome that creates new stakes. PbtA also fundamentally changes the power dynamic between the Game Master (GM) and the players. It emphasizes shared world creation, where the GM and players collaborate to build details and NPCs on the fly. This 'fiction-first' design allows for extreme player leeway in shaping relationships and the world. It has been praised for its ability to support 'queer narratives' and transformative experiences, moving away from pure conflict toward diverse storytelling across genres, from 19th-century ship crews to teenage superheroes.
