The club that scored Spain's first international goal
In short: Before Spain became a global football powerhouse, a small club from the Basque border provided the spark. Real Unión didn't just participate in the nation's early history; they provided the very first goal in Spain's international debut, marking a foundational moment for the country's football identity.
Real Unión emerged on 15 May 1915 as a result of Racing Club de Irún and Irún Sporting Club joining forces. Because it had secured the 1913 Copa del Rey, the second group added considerable status to the new entity. The club eventually secured royal approval from Alfonso XIII, granting them the 'Real' prefix, though they reverted to their original name during the Second Spanish Republic.
The club's early era was defined by domestic success and international curiosity. They won the Copa del Rey four times, notably defeating Real Madrid in 1918 and 1924. In 1920, during Spain's international debut at the Olympic Games, the club provided two players to the national squad. Patricio famously scored Spain's first-ever goal in a 1–0 victory over Denmark on August 28, 1920. Interestingly, the club also participated in the 1930 Coupe des Nations in Geneva—a predecessor to the UEFA Champions League—despite having finished only sixth in La Liga that season.
Following their relegation from the Spanish elite in 1932, the club entered a long period of fluctuation between the second and fourth tiers. A notable modern highlight occurred in the 2008–09 Copa del Rey, where Real Unión became the first team in history to eliminate Real Madrid from their home ground at the Santiago Bernabéu in a knockout format. Today, the club is under the influence of Unai Emery, whose family took over the club in 2021, followed by a 25% stake purchase by Aston Villa's holding company, V Sports, in December 2024.
