Novak Djokovic completes his career Golden Slam in Paris
In short: At the 2024 Summer Olympics, Novak Djokovic achieved a feat few in history ever will. By defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the men's singles final, the Serbian star secured his first Olympic gold medal and became the only man to win every major singles title.
The men's singles tournament at the 2024 Summer Olympics, held at Stade Roland Garros from 27 July to 4 August 2024, served as the stage for a historic milestone. Novak Djokovic, the tournament's top seed, entered the event seeking to complete his career Golden Slam. He had previously reached the semifinals in 2008, 2012, and 2020, but never secured the gold. His victory in Paris makes him the third man to achieve the Golden Slam, following Andre Agassi and Rafael Nadal.
The final was a clash of generations. Alcaraz of Spain played Djokovic, who stands as the most senior men's singles winner and finalist since tennis rejoined the Olympics in 1988. Alcaraz, making his Olympic debut, became the youngest finalist in the event's history. By securing a 7–6(7–3), 7–6(7–2) straight-sets victory, Djokovic achieved the distinction of being the first male to win Olympic gold without dropping a set.
Beyond the gold medal, the tournament featured a significant milestone in the rivalry between Djokovic and Nadal. In their 60th and final professional meeting, Djokovic defeated Nadal to end their head-to-head record at 31–29. The competition featured 64 players from 27 nations. Lorenzo Musetti of Italy secured bronze by overcoming Félix Auger-Aliassime from Canada 6–4, 1–6, 6–3, while the reigning champion, Alexander Zverev, was knocked out during the quarterfinals.
