From Melbourne busking to global stages: the trajectory of The Temper Trap
In short: The Temper Trap didn't start in a studio; they began with a busker, a guitar student, and a rejected name. Their journey from Melbourne's streets to headlining global tours illustrates the grit of indie rock, fueled by a move to London and a signature sound that transcended borders.
Formed in 2005, the band's origins are rooted in personal connections. Dougy Mandagi, an Indonesian-born busker, met Jonathon Aherne in 1999 while Aherne was learning guitar. Six years later, they teamed up with Toby Dundas, a former clothing store colleague. The band's name was a compromise; their first choice, Temper Temper, was already claimed by a United States group.
The group's breakthrough was a calculated international move. After signing with Liberation Music in 2006, they relocated to London in 2008 to build a European fan base. Their 2009 first record, Conditions, achieved success by reaching No. 9 on the ARIA Albums Chart. The release also managed to enter the UK top 30. Their lead single, "Sweet Disposition," became a multi-national success, reaching the top 10 in the UK, Ireland, and Belgium.
Success brought both accolades and evolution. The band won Best Group and Most Popular Australian Single at the 2010 ARIA Awards. However, the lineup shifted in October 2013 when lead guitarist Lorenzo Sillitto departed during the recording of their third album. They continued as a quartet, eventually releasing Thick as Thieves in 2016. After a hiatus starting in 2019, the band returned to the spotlight in 2022, releasing their fourth album, Sungazer, in July 2026.
The band's legacy is defined by its ability to balance indie roots with massive scale. They have performed for crowds of over 50,000 at the Corona Fest in Mexico City and played to 100,000 fans at the AFL Grand Final. Their evolution from a three-piece indie pop act to a globally touring rock band highlights the enduring power of independent music development.
