The 216-year legacy of a British bank ending in 2027
In short: TSB Bank is currently navigating a historic transition. After over two centuries of existence, the brand is set to be retired following a massive integration with Santander. But the journey to this point was marked by a high-stakes
The bank's current form was born out of necessity. In 2009, following a UK bank rescue, the government took a 43.4% stake in Lloyds Banking Group. To comply with European Commission state aid rules, Lloyds had to divest a retail business. This led to the creation of TSB Bank in September 2013, a move codenamed "Verde" that consolidated 632 branches from Lloyds TSB, Cheltenham & Gloucester, and Lloyds TSB Scotland.
The transition was far from seamless. In 2018, TSB attempted to migrate its customer records to the Sabadell Proteo platform. The move resulted in a massive IT failure that left about one million customers without online banking access and exposed private account details. This debacle led to the resignation of CEO Paul Pester, a £48.65 million fine for the bank in 2022, and a personal fine for the chief information officer.
Ownership has shifted rapidly since the 2013 launch. After a failed sale to the Co-operative Group in 2013, TSB was listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2014 before being acquired by Sabadell Group in 2015 for £1.7 billion. Santander UK purchased TSB for £2.65 billion from Sabadell during April 2026.
The brand's conclusion is approaching rapidly. Santander plans to integrate TSB's business into its own by the first half of 2027. While the TSB name has survived various mergers—including the 1995 formation of Lloyds TSB—it will officially be retired after 216 years of history.
