The elusive origin of golf: a mystery spanning continents and centuries

What Is The History Of Golf and Who Invented It 2025 · 4:41 · Video: Golf Untold · Watch at the source

In short: Was golf born in the courts of China, the fields of Rome, or the seaside links of Scotland? While it is now a global prestige sport, its true ancestor remains one of history's most debated mysteries, involving everything from Persian polo to medieval stick-and-ball games.

The precise invention of golf is difficult to ascertain because the game evolved from various regional stick-and-ball traditions. Some historians point to the Roman game of paganica, which involved hitting a wool- or feather-stuffed leather ball with a bent stick. This game may have spread across Europe during the 1st century BCE as the Romans expanded their territory. Alternatively, some suggest chuiwan (ch’ui-wan) from China—a game played during the Ming dynasty (1368–1644) and earlier involving hitting a ball with a stick while walking—was introduced to Europe by traders during the Middle Ages.

Other theories link golf to European pastimes like the English game of cambuca, the French chambot, or even the Italian-derived jeu de mail. These games were exported to Germany, England (where it was known as pall-mall), and the Low Countries. Interestingly, some 19th-century accounts, such as those by William Ousely in 1819, even claimed golf descended from chaugán, the Persian ancestor of modern polo.

Despite these diverse theories, many historians find neither the Roman nor the Chinese origins particularly convincing. Modern golf took its definitive shape in Scotland during the 15th century, specifically on seaside links characterized by crisp turf and natural hazards. It was only later that play expanded to downs, moorland, and parkland courses. The sport eventually gained worldwide popularity in the 20th century and returned to the Olympics after a 112-year absence.

The evolution of the game is marked by significant technological shifts, moving from featherie balls to modern drivers. Today, it remains a high-skill pursuit requiring patience and dedication, transitioning from an obscure antiquity into one of the world's most prestigious televised professional tournaments.
