From Martial Arts to Metaverses: The Evolution of a Parisian Landmark
In short: The Accor Arena is more than just a concert hall; it is a versatile architectural marvel capable of shifting from high-octane basketball to global esports championships. Its unique design allows for massive scale, hosting everything from the world's biggest pop stars to the most intense digital competitions.
Designed by Andrault-Parat, Jean Prouvé, and Aydin Guvan, the arena features a distinct pyramidal shape with sloping walls covered in lawn. This architectural flexibility allows its capacity to fluctuate significantly depending on the event requirements, ranging from 7,000 to as many as 20,300 people. Since its opening, it has served as a primary hub for diverse cultural expressions, including the annual Festival des Arts Martiaux—a martial arts showcase founded by Karaté Bushido in 1985.
The venue's history is marked by significant transitions and naming rights. Originally known as Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy (POPB), it underwent several rebrandings, becoming Bercy Arena in 2015 and eventually Accor Arena in 2020. It has hosted a staggering variety of sports, including the European gymnastics championship in 2000, various FIBA EuroBasket events, and even kart racing from 1993 to 2011. Notably, it served as the site for the final track duel between Formula One legends Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna.
In recent years, the arena has solidified its status as a premier destination for modern entertainment and esports. It hosted artistic gymnastics and basketball medal games during the 2024 Summer Olympics (temporarily reverting to its 'Bercy Arena' name due to naming rights rules). In addition to athletic events, this venue serves as a hub for online gaming; it held the League of Legends World Championship Finals during 2019 and is slated to feature the 2026 Esports World Cup Counter-Strike 2 tournament's concluding matches.
