How a single university initiative reached 3,000 students in Nicaragua
What began as a small group of passionate tech students at the National University of Engineering has transformed into a nationwide movement. Discover how the CS50 curriculum is being adapted to teach everything from web development to robotics to children across Nicaragua.
The expansion of computer science education in Nicaragua is driven by a localized implementation of Harvard University's CS5-0. Originally designed as an introduction to the logic of programming and the broader field of computer science, the curriculum has been successfully adapted by local leaders. Silvio Duarte, the Code Program Director at Fundación Uno, oversees a project that has grown significantly since its inception, moving far beyond its initial scope at the National University of Engineering.
To date, the initiative has reached more than 3,000 individuals throughout the country. The program's evolution is marked by a broadening of subject matter. While the foundation rests on the core CS50 curriculum, the movement now encompasses specialized tracks such as Web50x.ni, which focuses on Web Programming using JavaScript and Python. This expansion ensures that learners are engaging with modern, industry-relevant technologies.
The impact of the program also extends to much younger learners. By utilizing tools like Scratch and introducing robotics, the project has successfully brought computational thinking to elementary school students. This multi-tiered approach demonstrates how a high-level academic framework can be repurposed to build a foundational tech ecosystem, starting with young children and progressing through university-level engineering students.
This growth mirrors the global adaptability seen in the CS50 Educator Workshop 2022. While these workshops are traditionally held on the Harvard University campus, the 2022 session transitioned to an online format via Zoom. This allowed educators, both new and experienced, to explore new technological and curricular offerings, sharing methods for how to adopt or adapt the famous curriculum for their own unique classroom needs.
