How to build a working dam model to inspire the next generation of engineers
A civil engineer demonstrates a custom-built, interactive display designed to make complex water infrastructure concepts engaging for students. By simulating reservoirs, flood control, and hydroelectric power, this project shows how hands-on exhibits can turn technical engineering principles into accessible, captivating lessons.
The display uses a pump to simulate rainfall filling a reservoir, while a pitcher of water can trigger a flood simulation. A crest gate serves as a flood control mechanism, and downstream houses illustrate how elevation impacts flood risk. The model also incorporates a computer fan to represent hydro-power, a garden hose and sink for water supply, and fish to highlight the necessity of environmental flows.
Inspired by the work of Boss Display Corporation, the project aims to demystify civil engineering by mirroring the creativity found in science museums. The goal is to spark curiosity about infrastructure and potentially inspire future dam engineers through interactive, visual storytelling.
