The quest to strip smartphones of their corporate baggage
In short: Most smartphones are designed to track you and collect data by default. DivestOS was an ambitious project that sought to reverse this by creating a privacy-first operating system. By stripping away proprietary software and focusing on security, it aimed to give users total control over their digital lives.
DivestOS emerged in 2014 as a specialized soft fork of LineageOS. Its primary goal was to provide a hardened mobile experience by removing proprietary blobs and pre-installed applications that typically compromise user privacy. Unlike standard Android distributions, DivestOS prioritized a minimal footprint, including only a few essential tools like the F-Droid app store, the Hypatia real-time malware scanner, and the Carrion robocall blocker.
This approach allowed users to reclaim their hardware from the 'bloatware' common in mainstream devices. Technically, the project distinguished itself through rigorous security protocols. It utilized release-keys, which allowed users to re-lock their device bootloaders on supported hardware—a critical feature for maintaining a secure chain of trust. Additionally, the team employed an automated CVE patcher to shield the kernel against known vulnerabilities.
The project was notable for its longevity and reach, supporting a wide array of hardware, including older 'end-of-life' devices that had been abandoned by manufacturers but were still capable of running modern, secure software. The project's impact was recognized by the community and the broader free software movement. In 2022, the chief developer, Tad (known as SkewedZeppelin), received a prestigious award from the Free Software Foundation for his contributions to the ecosystem. However, the mobile chapter of the project reached its conclusion in December 2024. While the DivestOS mobile operating system was discontinued, the developer announced that non-mobile projects under the Divest umbrella would continue to be maintained, marking the end of a significant era in privacy-focused mobile computing.
