The pursuit of a single set of laws for everything

In short: From the subatomic dance of electrons to the vast movements of galaxies, physics seeks a unified truth. While we often see physics as a collection of separate rules for different scales, its ultimate goal is to find a few comprehensive principles that explain every disparate phenomenon in the universe.

At its core, physics is the science of matter, motion, and energy. This field examines how the basic components of our visible cosmos relate and how matter is organised. This includes the behavior of objects under forces as well as the nature of gravitational, electromagnetic, and nuclear force fields. Because these laws are expressed with mathematical precision, they allow scientists to move from observation to prediction. Historically, the field was known as natural philosophy until the modern era of specialization. Today, it is distinguished from fields like astronomy, chemistry, and geology, though it remains the foundation for all natural sciences. This influence is seen in specialized branches like astrophysics, geophysics, and biophysics. The advancement of the field relies on the complementary relationship between experiment—the controlled observation of phenomena—and theory, which provides the conceptual framework. One of the most significant distinctions in the field is between classical physics and modern physics.

Classical physics, developed up to the turn of the 20th century, successfully explains macroscopic objects moving slowly relative to the speed of light, as well as heat, sound, and electricity. However, modern developments in relativity and quantum mechanics are required to understand higher speeds, very massive objects, and the tiny elementary constituents of matter like protons and neutrons. While a completely unified theory may never be achieved, the fact that a remarkably small set of fundamental laws can account for almost all known phenomena is a testament to human achievement. The ultimate objective remains the formulation of a unified set of laws that govern the microscopic, the macroscopic, and the extragalactic scales simultaneously. Even when a law is modified or restricted by a new experiment, it serves as a stepping stone toward this ambitious goal.

The Marble+ series showcases these principles through 3D physics simulations created in Blender and Houdini, providing a visual representation of smooth motion and realistic interactions.
